The Port Arthur Chamber reluctantly bids farewell to Amber R. Clark. Amber will be teaching elementary school in the Port Arthur School District. Amber did a great job for us in this past year and we wish her our very best. We did warn her that she was going to receive more education from her students this year than in 4 years of college.
With Amber leaving we interviewed several applicants to fill the vacant position. We were fortunate to hire Ana Carthers. Ana has almost 10 years of experience with government agencies and private industry. She holds a B.A. in Spanish and a minor in Mass Communications from Texas State University - San Marcos. Once Ana has become acquainted with the chamber we will ask her to help us in reaching out to our Hispanic Businesses and encourage them to take advantage of existing programs and help us design new programs that target the Hispanic leaders.
Latest Unemployment numbers show some improvement.
Unemployment is down in Port Arthur by two percent from same time in 2012. In July of 2012 we had 4,404 people unemployed out a workforce of 24,017. In July of 2013 we had 3,835 people unemployed out of a workforce of 23,636. These numbers indicate a reduction in our workforce by 381 people. This number indicates either 381 people found work, moved, or quit looking for jobs. The report also shows we had 19,613 citizens working in 2012 and 19,801 working in 2013. That is an increase of 188 more people employed. As you read these numbers you may notice that approximately 30,000 other Port Arthur citizens are not counted in this report. We must assume they are too young, too old or too lazy to be counted in the workforce. I once asked a person in a position to know, how these numbers were reported. The answer was honest, “It depends on the story people who hold high elected positions want told.”
Aldo Salazar with Cheniere tells me that Cheniere Energy will be hosting several job fairs during October, November and December in the Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana areas. Cheniere is looking for employment candidates with experience as process operators or maintenance technicians in industrial facilities to fill positions at their Sabine Pass LNG Terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Additional information about the upcoming job fairs is available at www.worklng.com. These job fairs provide an opportunity for potential candidates to gather more information about Cheniere, the education and skills required, and to provide copies of their resumes to company representatives.
