Texas 2036 Article

As you may or may not be aware, I am the Golden Triangle area’s representative on a Statewide committee called Texas 2036.  This committee was formed by Tom Luce, as gift to our great State of Texas.  Our President/CEO is well known is the State of Texas as well, Margaret Spelling. 

 

The committee’s mission in a nutshell, is to be ready to make decisions for our state’s future with data driven resources, which should enhance our success rate in solving Texas problems. 

 

Here is the official Mission Statement of Teas 2036: 

To enable Texans to make policy decisions through accessible data, long-term planning, and statewide engagement.

 

The official Texas 2036 Vision Statement: Texas is the best place to live and work.

 

I was appointed to this board for my background in the refining and petrochemical industries and for my experience in workforce development and training.

 

 

Tom Luce

Founder and Chairman

Informed by decades of public policy experience at the local, state, and national level, Tom Luce founded Texas 2036 amid growing concern that without careful consideration, planning and decision-making for the next generation, the tremendous opportunities Texas offers may not exist for future generations. In addition to Texas 2036, Tom has founded and led numerous other nonprofit organizations, including Just for the Kids, the National Math and Science Initiative, and most recently the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute.  Since beginning his career as a lawyer and founding partner of the Hughes and Luce law firm, Tom’s career has been distinguished by gubernatorial and legislative appointments to major state and national positions, including Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court pro tempore, the Library of Congress Board and as Assistant Secretary of Education where he served alongside Secretary Spellings. 

 

Margaret Spellings

President and CEO

A nationally recognized leader in public policy, Margaret Spellings joined Texas 2036 after serving as president of the 17-institution University of North Carolina System. Spellings’ extensive leadership experience in state and federal government includes service as U.S. Secretary of Education, White House Chief Domestic Policy Advisor, Senior Policy Advisor to then-Governor George W. Bush, and President of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Through her work as legislative director and chief committee clerk for the Texas House of Representatives, Spellings’ helped lead bipartisan efforts making her a well-respected leader across the state. 

 

In 2036, Texas turns 200
Are we ready?

For nearly two centuries, Texas has been a place of invention, development, research, incredible growth, and great successes. Yet, our past profitability does not guarantee our future success.

In the year 2036, our state will have a population of approximately 10 million more Texans. This kind of growth provides significant positive possibilities, but poses significant threats to strain our infrastructure, water supplies, schools, health care system, economy, and may create imbalances in our state in the future.

To continue to be the best place to live, work and play for the next generation of Texans, and future generations after them, we will need to come together, from all different parts of the State and from different professions and disciplines, to think strategically to construct the right solutions and paths forward.
